Chapter -1 (Class 6)

Introduction to Computer

A computer is an electronic device that helps us store, process, and display information. It works according to the instructions given by users. Computers make our work easier, faster, and more accurate.

Today, computers are used in schools, homes, hospitals, offices, banks, and many other places. They help people perform different tasks such as typing documents, watching videos, playing games, learning online, and communicating with others.

The word computer comes from the word “compute”, which means to calculate.

Working Steps of Computer (IPOS Cycle)

A computer works through a process called the IPOS cycle. IPOS stands for Input, Processing, Output, and Storage.

                                                                             Fig.1

1. Input (I)

Input means entering data and instructions into the computer using input devices.

Examples of input devices:

  • Keyboard
  • Mouse
  • Scanner
  • Microphone

Example: Typing your name using a keyboard.

2. Processing (P)

Processing means the computer works on the given data and converts it into useful information. The CPU (Central Processing Unit) performs this task.

Example: Calculating marks entered into a spreadsheet.

3. Output (O)

Output is the result produced by the computer after processing.

Examples of output devices:

  • Monitor
  • Printer
  • Speaker
  • Projector

Example: Displaying the calculated result on the monitor.

4. Storage (S)

Storage means saving data and information for future use.

Examples:

  • Hard disk
  • Pen drive
  • Memory card
  • SSD

Example: Saving homework files on a computer.

IPOS Flow:
Input → Processing → Output → Storage

Features of Computer

Computers have many important features:

1. Speed

Computers can perform tasks very quickly within seconds.

2. Accuracy

Computers provide accurate results if correct data is entered.

3. Storage Capacity

Computers can store a large amount of data and information.

4. Diligence

Computers can work continuously without getting tired.

5. Versatility

Computers can perform different types of tasks.

6. Reliability

Application Areas of Computer

Computers are used in many fields of life. Some application areas are:

1. Education

Computers help students learn through online classes, educational software, and digital libraries.

2. Hospitals

Doctors use computers to keep patient records and perform medical tests.

3. Banking

Banks use computers for transactions, account management, and online banking.

4. Business

Computers help in record keeping, accounting, and communication.

5. Entertainment

People use computers for games, movies, music, and videos.

6. Communication

Computers help people communicate through email, video calls, and social media.

7. Science and Research

Scientists use computers for experiments and data analysis.

8. Transportation

Computers help manage ticket booking and traffic systems.

Conclusion
