Chapter 2 Class 6

Computer System

A computer system is an electronic device that accepts data, processes it, stores it, and produces useful information as output. Computers help people perform tasks quickly, accurately, and efficiently. A computer system is made up of different components that work together to complete tasks.

Hardware

Definition: Hardware refers to the physical parts of a computer system that can be seen and touched. Hardware helps the computer receive input, process data, store information, and produce output.

Examples of Hardware:

  • Keyboard
  • Mouse
  • Monitor
  • CPU
  • Printer
  • Scanner
  • Speakers

Types of Hardware

1. Input Hardware

Input devices are used to enter data and instructions into the computer.

Examples:

  • Keyboard – Used for typing text and numbers.
  • Mouse – Used for pointing, clicking, and selecting items.
  • Scanner – Used to scan pictures and documents.
  • Microphone – Used to enter sound or voice.

2. Output Hardware

Output devices display the results after processing.

Examples:

  • Monitor – Displays information on the screen.
  • Printer – Prints documents and pictures.
  • Speakers – Produce sound output.

3. Storage Hardware

Storage devices store data and information for future use.

Examples:

  • Hard Disk
  • Pen Drive
  • Memory Card
  • CD/DVD

4. Processing Hardware

  • CPU (Central Processing Unit) is known as the brain of the computer because it processes all instructions and controls computer activities.

Software

Definition: Software is a collection of programs and instructions that tells the computer what to do. Unlike hardware, software cannot be seen or touched because it is not a physical component.

Examples:

  • Windows
  • MS Word
  • MS Paint
  • Calculator
  • Google Chrome

Types of Software

1. System Software

System software controls and manages computer hardware and allows other programs to run.

Examples:

  • Windows
  • Linux
  • Android
  • Device Drivers

Functions of System Software:

  • Manages computer hardware
  • Controls computer operations
  • Runs application software

2. Application Software

Application software helps users perform specific tasks.

Examples:

  • MS Word – Used for typing documents
  • MS Paint – Used for drawing pictures
  • Calculator – Used for calculations
  • Browser – Used to access the internet

User

A user is a person who uses the computer system to perform different tasks. Users give instructions and operate the computer.

Examples of users:

  • Student – Uses a computer for learning and projects.
  • Teacher – Uses a computer for preparing lessons and teaching.
  • Office Worker – Uses a computer for reports and records.
  • Designer – Uses a computer for creating designs and graphics.

Data

Data means raw facts and figures entered into the computer for processing. After processing, data becomes useful information.

Examples of data:

  • Text
  • Numbers
  • Images
  • Sound
  • Video

Example: Students’ marks entered into a computer are data. After calculating grades, the result becomes information.

Components of a Computer System

A computer system mainly consists of four components:

1. Hardware

Physical parts of the computer system.

2. Software

Programs and instructions used to operate the computer.

3. Data

Raw facts and figures entered into the computer.

4. User

People who operate and use the computer.

All these components work together to make a computer system function properly.

Conclusion

Computer systems are used in schools, homes, banks, hospitals, offices, and many other places. Understanding hardware, software, users, and data helps students learn the basic working of computers and their importance in daily life.
